FROGS
1993, PEN & INK
18 x 24 IN.
| This was the first piece
of art that I did in high school, my junior year which solidified my decision to absolutely
peruse art after school, college, and beyond. I was extremely fortunate to have a
truly unique and special teacher. Ms. Gallo saw my abilities, fostered them, encouraged
them, and pushed them to as far I could take them. I still consider her the most influential
teacher in my life to date. It was our first big project of the fall that year and the theme was to take an object and fill in the mass of that object with smaller pieces of the whole. I don't remember why I chose frogs. I guess I thought they'd be interesting. I've always like nature though. The Frogs piece initially began with a sketch of the silhouette of the main frog and then I began to fill in the others. The smaller, thumbnail is the first frog I drew in the mass of other frogs. I remember it because it was an Amazonian Tree frog and I thought I had screwed it up because I made it so dark. As I drew more and more frogs I literally got to the point where I was no longer sketching with pencil, but just drawing with the pen. It was one of the first times I did this and since has become my preferred way of drawing. |
